EMSG’s ‘Service and Quality First’ Business Model Explodes with Help from Industry Experts MIRTEC and Hanwha Techwin

Headquartered in York, PA, Electronic Manufacturing Services Group, Inc. (EMSG) offers customers a full range of automated surface mount technology (SMT) and thru-hole equipment designed for quick set-up. The company provides quality customer satisfaction, industry expertise and superb value, and its skilled workforce provides detailed hand assembly certified to IPC-A-610 Class II and IPC-A-610 Class III.

More than ever, outsourcing electronic assembly needs is a critical decision for a company. EMSG understands that there are numerous printed circuit board assembly companies to choose from; however, EMSG stands out from the rest because it is well equipped to handle both board-level and complete box build assemblies, including customized packaging. The company’s goal is to achieve customer satisfaction with superior service and products that combine to make EMSG the number one choice for PCB assembly.

“EMSG’s objective is to help our customers go to market successfully,” said Alex Hamp, Secretary/Treasurer. “We understand that every customer is unique and requires special attention. EMSG also can be an integral part in the design of a product, whether customers require PCB assembly services, board layout or engineering services to change the product from thru-hole to SMT.”

EMSG has created a business model that focuses on service and quality first. It continuously invests in the latest technology in surface mount, AOI and selective solder. Additionally, the company performs in-house testing, conformal coating and box builds.

In addition to its in-house expertise, customers receive access to a state-of-the-art 20,000 sq. ft. facility with 4,000 sq. ft. of engineering and office spaces — all dedicated to filling customer orders in a timely manner. Hamp added, “We’re proud of our highly trained staff as well as our equipment, which is why you’ll find our ability to fill all sizes and types of orders, from small to large and from prototype to high volume, is far ahead of our closest competitors.”

The company also knows that since there is a choice about where to take electronic assembly outsourcing needs, that choice deserves to be backed by both internal processes and proven, dependable results. For this reason, the company is ISO 9001:2015-certified. This means that the manufacturing of electronic equipment, printed circuit boards and assemblies is overseen by a quality management system that adheres strictly to the quality-control requirements of the world’s largest organization concerned with issuing and maintaining standards.

Additionally, EMSG is proud to be one of only a small handful of companies FDA-registered with the purpose of printing circuit boards and assemblies for highly demanding medical and health applications.

To grow as strong as EMSG has and with such a reputation for quality, the company depends on its partnerships with key industry manufacturers. EMSG relies on a small group of companies for its purchases of innovative and dependable technology solutions. Among this group are MIRTEC Corp. and Hanwha Techwin Precision Machinery.

MIRTEC, based in Connecticut, is a leading global supplier of automated inspection systems to the electronics manufacturing industry, and California-based Hanwha Techwin Precision Machinery provides synergized SMT assembly solutions combined with world-class service and support throughout North America.

EMSG is a repeat customer of both companies. EMSG previously purchased and currently uses two MIRTEC MV-3L automated optical inspection (AOI) systems to accurately detect component-level defects, such as missing, wrong polarity, damaged, and wrong components. Defects are easily recognized and reported. The systems detect lead-level defects, such as bridging and insufficient solder for components as small as 16-mil pitch. It also has six Hanwha Techwin systems on its line: three SM421 intelligent systems that feature chip placement speeds up to 21,000 CPH and that place from 0.01005 up to 55 mm sq. components with placement accuracies of ±0.03 mm @ 3 sigma, and one SM482/FR large-format pick-and-place machine with 1200 x 460 mm board placement capability. Chip placement speeds for this system are up to 22,000 CPH, and it places components from 0.01005 up to 55 mm. Additionally, it owns and uses a Decan F2 high-speed pick-and-place machine and an ESE printer.

MIRTEC has earned a solid reputation in the Electronics Inspection Industry. The company’s technologically advanced AOI systems allow EMSG to maintain the highest quality production standards.

“We purchased our first MIRTEC AOI system in 2007 and then quickly purchased another in 2008. We purchased our first Hanwha (then Samsung) 421 pick-and-place machine in 2009. We have since added five more Hanwha machines,” said Hamp.

He added that the company first decided to purchase equipment from MIRTEC and Hanwha due to their technology and service. “MIRTEC’s technology has given EMSG the ability to inspect all of our circuit board assemblies at the utmost quality, giving us confidence in all the circuit board assemblies leaving our facility,” he said. “Hanwha’s technology has given us the ability to assemble any circuit board technology all in one machine. Hanwha also has provided us with a solution to build circuit boards up to 48 in. The technology has given us a significant advantage in the highly competitive industry of contract manufacturing.”

Because the company has been so pleased with the technology from both companies, it purchased a new system from each at the 2019 SMTA International exhibition: MIRTEC’s MV-3 OMNI 3D Desktop AOI Machine and HANWHA’s ESE Model LX3 large format printer.

“We purchased the MV-3 OMNI 3D because of the advancements MIRTEC has made in AOI technology. This new system is capable of looking at components and solder joints in 3D, giving our inspectors even more precision in looking at our circuit boards. Additionally, this system is capable of mapping a board for inspection using the Gerber files we use to create the board. This will cut programming time in half and allow us to inspect a greater quantity of circuit boards,” Hamp explained. “We had already purchased a Hanwha Techwin ESE Model LX3 large-format printer in 2017, but we needed to add another to keep up with demand for circuit boards in excess of the standard 24 in. most printers handle. This will continue to help EMSG be the industry leader in continuous 4 ft. circuit boards.”

MIRTEC is comprised of a talented and knowledgeable team of sales and support professionals. With more than 30 sales and support centers located strategically throughout North America, MIRTEC provides customers with a full range of services including consultation, installation, equipment training, and after-sales support. Additionally, the company focuses heavily on continual improvement with the purpose of constantly increasing the value of the products and services provided to customers. The company’s goal is to deliver the highest quality products and services at competitive pricing. It recognizes that its customers are the source of future growth and, as such, strives for a strong, reliable and long-term partnership based on trust and respect. Brian D’Amico, president, said, “We listen to our customers’ needs and deliver prompt service. We consistently work to exceed their expectations. We aim to bring positive changes to their business. In short, our ultimate objective is the absolute success of our customers. We are extremely proud of our partnership with EMSG and are equally committed to their goal of continuous quality improvement.”

Hanwha Techwin Precision Machinery provides customers with solutions that include state-of-the-art printing, placement, reflow and board handling technologies to achieve high quality and price performance without compromising flexibility and growth path on demand. All systems include installation, training, warranty, 24/7 technical phone support, next business day onsite support, next business day shipment of emergency spare parts, and more. After developing the first chip mounter in 1989, Hanwha Precision Machinery has become a leading worldwide Smart Factory solutions provider with the goal of developing customer-oriented solutions that deliver greater efficiency, versatility and value.

“EMSG and Hanwha have enjoyed a positive, collaborative partnership for many years,” said Robert Watters, Regional Sales Manager, Hanwha Techwin. “EMSG has been a prime participant in our ‘Voice of Customer’ (VOC) initiative. As a rapidly growing, high-mix EMS supplier, EMSG has partnered with Hanwha in implementing technology to address both standard PCB size assembly requirements as well as 1.2M PCB size requirements in both pick-and-place and stencil printing disciplines. As a result, both EMSG and Hanwha have experienced significant growth in the 1.2M PCB assembly market segment.”

In working with both companies, Hamp stressed the importance and value of service just as much as technology. “Customer service from both companies is unparallel. Both companies will have a field service technician here at the drop of a hat if we need them. Brian D’Amico of MIRTEC as well as Jonny Nichols and Bob Watters of Hanwha are fantastic individuals to deal with and always go above and beyond.”

He concluded, “We know from years of experience what it means to get the job done right — on time and within your budget. This includes the sanitary needs of medical components, the rugged designs of construction and utility controls, and the environmental considerations of the communications and lighting industries.” Partnering with leading, innovative companies such as MIRTEC and Hanwha Techwin help EMSG keep its rock-solid reputation for quality and dependability.”
