Pegmatis Engineers a Better Future by Capitalizing on Experience and Technology

By Kevin Larkin

Pegmatis began in 2009 as a Fortune 500 Company’s elite design center working with top-tier customers from design ideation, cost-driven design architecture up to launching scores of high-volume products into the market. “Chances are you have used or worked with a product that we have designed,” said Andrew Taylor, Sales Director. “We have developed high-tech products from mobile smart phones and connected streaming devices to ultra-high-end audio and medical products.” As of 2016, Pegmatis has been operating under its own banner and has continued to provide high-fidelity design, development, and manufacturing services to customers, leveraging its network for mass production. “Our Engineering bench has been collaborating on projects for the past 15 years,” added Taylor. The company prides itself on being a true complete end-to-end design and development partner in both hardware and software and merges these two distinct technology streams to seamlessly roll out to production.

With its strategic, operational and technical foundation, Pegmatis creates solutions that work. As the premier design firm in North America, its solutions are the result of experience, continual research, and integration of emerging technologies to deliver truly innovative results. The company combines experience, art, science, and technology to engineer new products and solutions. Pegmatis differentiates itself from typical design companies by expertly designing products for seamless integration into manufacturing and assembly.  Additionally, Pegmatis partners with enterprises to bring products to market faster and more cost-effectively, from concept to creation.

Regardless of its customers’ organizational capabilities, processes and culture, Pegmatis can bring value to any project, regardless of the stage. Its end-to-end, human-centric approach, combined with top-notch technological and innovative skills, creates value for its customers’ organization. It manages every project holistically, clearly understanding the complexities and disciplines involved for every stage of the development process. Customers have the benefit of receiving results on time, within budget and aligned with their overall business outcomes.

With a design approach of “dream, design, deliver”, Pegmatis has developed a highly flexible design process to be adaptable to meet customers’ unique requirements and focus on their business outcomes. The company’s proven design approach comes from many years of experience launching high-quality, integrated products into mass production. When partnering with the Pegmatis team, customers know they are getting support from experts who have collaborated on hundreds of projects from concept through production support. The team also has experience working with Fortune 1000 organizations who recognized the value that the engineering team delivers and appreciates the all-inclusive approach to any project integrating business consulting, engineering and design. A few of the projects Pegmatis has worked on include the SuntoWater atmospheric water generation appliance, Patriot One Technologies’ weapons detection system and Nanit Plus infant monitors. The company works across a range of industries to solve challenges and create solutions that not only meet but exceed customer expectations.

The concept to creation design process is straightforward:

• Empathize: It begins the process by gathering real insights about the customer and their objectives, providing a strong foundation for the project. Through collaboration, its goal is to gain a shared understanding of customer needs and to envision an achievable solution strategy.

• Define: At this stage Pegmatis develops a meaningful, actionable problem statement. Looking at “current state” vs. desired “future state” the team defines a clear objective that addresses all the stakeholder’s requirements.

• Ideate: A critical transitional step in the process, it is at this point that the company comes up with potential solutions.

• Plan: By this stage, Pegmatis has learned about its customer and their objectives, it has a clearer understanding of the problem to be solved, and it has identified the necessary resources to assist on the project. Major risks have been identified as well. The company creates a project strategy and plan that engages its cross-functional teams. Planning includes more than just the development strategy. There are test planning, certification planning and other issues to consider.

• Research: The company uses in-depth research to hypothesize solutions that mitigate risk, and improve efficiency to save time, money and resources.

Prototype: At this stage Pegmatis executes, validates and questions the following from our research efforts: How will users interact and react? Will it work in the real world? Can it be manufactured?

• Execution: By now, the risks have been reduced and the company is in the development execution phase.

• Test: Pegmatis incorporates testing into every stage of the process. Its motto is test early, test often. Once there is a prototype the company iterates, refines, reworks and constantly makes improvements, ensuring a market-ready solution.

 • Production: DfX (manufacturing, quality, assembly, test) is a big part of the process. Because of Pegmatis’ experience, the company’s designs meet all necessary aspects for seamless production. Its entire team is engaged at this level, ensuring that all aspects are covered thoughtfully.

Pegmatis provides a range of services to customers: software, hardware, manufacturing, consulting and value engineering.

Software: The company specializes in the end-to-end development of connected/IoT products and their associated ecosystem of software assets such as mobile, web, or desktop applications, and cloud-based infrastructures, manufacturing test infrastructure, manufacturing and post-manufacturing device provisioning. Its software development staff works with its hardware designers, trusted suppliers and partners to keep abreast of latest technological advancements. This, combined with its collective centuries of industry experience, allows Pegmatis to provide its customers with the technology leadership they deserve. The company’s software team is capable of working anywhere in the software stack from firmware to high-performance library, framework, or application. It can help at any phase in the process and with most technologies. The company has resources on hand that can fill any role in the software development discipline ranging from project management, requirements specification, ideation, prototyping, architecture, user experience, coding, quality assurance (test planning, test execution, test automation).

Hardware: “Our seasoned team of expert designers has spent their careers launching scores of products into mass production,” commented Taylor. “We simply know the process and it is evident in the way we work.” At each stage, the company has its eye on the end result – manufacturing capability, cost, time to market, certifications, functionality, and quality. With Pegmatis, customers are assured of a seamless product development lifecycle. Additionally, at Pegmatis, delivery doesn’t stop when the paper exercise is complete. It ensures function, quality and process capability are met throughout the process. Its team is present at the factory before, during, and after formal launch. Its experience and services go far beyond engineering. If necessary, the company help with manufacturing partner selection, manufacturing technology, supply chain integration, certification support, and it also can provide expert direction for manufacturing test coverage and implementation.

Manufacturing: Selecting a manufacturing partner early in the design process is critical. Not all contract manufacturers are the same, nor do they offer the same level of capability. Engaging with Pegmatis early on allows the company to meet customers’ cost targets, business goals and milestones. Early engagement also ensures the product proceeds through development with minimal headache. Pegmatis has a large network of trusted manufacturing partners, onshore, offshore, and nearshore. It works with customers to match manufacturing partners that align with their needs. Additionally, it works closely with each customer’s team, actively considering budget, time to market, supply chain and product needs. Many newcomers to design overlook the importance of the hardware selection process. This is inherently intertwined with manufacturing. When Pegmatis designs, it considers component sourcing availability, lifecycle, cost, volume benefits, functionality, complexity, product tooling, supplier hardware and software support.

Consulting: Pegmatis is a solutions provider that ensures projects not only meet the technical specifications but also align with the organization’s strategic objectives and timelines. With its experience and expertise across all phases of the design process and decades of successful projects under the belt, the company brings a holistic real-world perspective to the project. This experience provides a unique ability to quickly identify where the roadblocks may be, why a project has stalled or how to take a concept all the way through the design process, delivering a solution ready for manufacture or production.

The company’s seasoned teams of designers and operations professionals can help

investors and inventors that are looking for validation of product technical viability or supporting

the due diligence process. Pegmatis provides a technical assessment to ensure the technology opportunity is sound. “We will provide unbiased assessments on any technical aspect of an opportunity you are concerned about,” Taylor added.

Value Engineering: Customers often ask for help streamlining designs or reducing costs. Pegmatis considers the following categories during a value engineering exercise: cost reduction, feature refresh, quality improvements, performance improvements, design scalability, manufacturing yield improvements, and component end-of-life mitigation.

Pegmatis’ design philosophy is simple: Innovation is a central process that drives economic progress and provides organizations with competitive advantages as well as sustainable growth. With an emphasis on technology, the company incorporates strategy, collaboration, value, communication and transparency into the design process. “Basically, we provide you with the scaffolding upon which you can build your dreams,” concluded Taylor. “Our engineering and technology framework carry your concept into reality.”
