SelecTech’s Flooring Provides Quality and Innovation While Being Environmentally-Conscious

By Joe Berkowitz, Sales Director

Founded in 1993 with the mission of creating valuable products from scrap plastics, SelecTech is a known leader in the manufacture of innovative flooring products from recycled materials. For more than 26 years, the company has strived to learn from its customers to create ESD, commercial, and residential flooring lines that integrate their needs with some of the “greenest” and most cost-effective products on the market.

In a world of heavy consumerism, sometimes it can be difficult to take a step back and really evaluate the effects certain purchases can have on the environment. But SelecTech customers don’t have to worry about that. The company’s line of flooring is made with materials that are already here, significantly reducing the impact of production. Additionally, their durability means customers do not have to purchase new flooring, further decreasing their carbon footprint.

Crestron Electronics needed new ESD flooring but couldn’t afford the downtime/disruption of a conventional glue-down flooring. With FreeStyle ESD, they installed sections on nights and weekends, using their own facilities people. They simply lifted benches when they got to them without moving them out of place. This gave them a new ESD floor with no disruption to their business.

“We believe we have the power to make a change in the world of construction. Starting out as a recycling organization gives us a bit of an edge. We figured out how to make a desirable product – high quality, easy to install flooring – out of a material that can’t always be reused,” said President Tom Ricciardelli. “By using recycled material and a less harmful method of installation, our flooring systems can save the planet, as well as your time and money.”

The company features three divisions: StaticStop Flooring (ESD), FreeStyle Flooring (commercial), and Place N’ Go Flooring (residential). Each is recognized for SelecTech’s unique interlocking system as the only product on the market without any disclaimers for irregular, high-moisture, or problem subfloors. Its design is acknowledged for minimal floor prep, superior performance, simple installation, and minimized downtime or disruption. For these reasons, SelecTech’s solutions provide significant value to those looking for environmentally-friendly, durable, easy-to-install flooring options in a variety of industries without the need for adhesives, moisture barriers, or underlayment.

Under the ESD section, SelecTech’s StaticStop interlocking flooring tiles are manufactured with a minimum of 20 percent recycled materials. This is the only conductive flooring of its kind that can contribute to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) points. Possessing LEED points or a LEED certification indicates that your organization exhibits an environmental consciousness, which can potentially equate to tax credits and or exemptions.

FreeStyle Flooring represents the first interlocking flooring products that are truly designed for heavy-duty commercial and industrial applications. Made with a patented blend of recycled plastics, FreeStyle flooring overcomes the rigorous demands of commercial environments. Its flexible composition, combined with the company’s unique interlocking system allows Freestyle flooring to be installed over many problem subfloors, including high-moisture concrete, stained, cracked and irregular subfloors, and old flooring. This feature also allows FreeStyle products to be installed without adhesives and at a much lower cost, which increases the value of “scrap” plastics to the customer. Backed by a 10-year commercial wear warranty, FreeStyle not only will quickly cover a problem floor, but it also will provide an attractive, functional floor surface for many years to come.

New Energy needed to set up a quick lab in their office to conduct research on an advanced communications device. They needed something fast and reliable that could be installed over existing carpet. They installed FreeStyle ESD in just a few minutes and were quickly underway with their research.

As part of the residential division, Place N’ Go Flooring provides homeowners with access to top-performing interlocking flooring that is adhesive-free and easy to install in any room of a home.

The company’s flooring systems have a durable top layer that comes in a variety of decorative styles and colors to complement the basement, home office, kitchen, living room, home gym, kids’ playroom, or bathroom. Place N’ Go flooring is made with a resilient recycled plastic that resists moisture and installs easily over a variety of problem subfloors. It requires no underlayments, moisture barriers or adhesives, making it ideal for basement floor substrates: simply snap the tiles together, and the floor is ready for use.

Tyco Subcom built a new facility but the concrete wasn’t curing fast enough to install glue-down flooring. They were up against a strict deadline, so they used SelecTech’s FreeStyle ESD interlocking flooring, which isn’t sensitive to the moisture in the concrete. With the FreeStyle ESD, they didn’t have to wait the typical 60-90 days for the concrete to fully cure and were up and running within their desired schedule.

Backed by a 25-year residential wear warranty, Place N’ Go flooring will not only quickly cover problem floors including basement flooring foundations, but it will provide an attractive, functional surface for many years to come. Ricciardelli  added, “Our company is committed to changing the flooring industry to help better our environment. Place N’ Go has one of the highest recycled contents (70 percent) of any decorative flooring product, and it is 100 percent recyclable back into new Place N’ Go products.”

The company’s modular and glue-down flooring from all three divisions are certified MAS Green. Only products that pass the stringent MAS tests can display the MAS Certified Green logo. This logo is your assurance SelecTech’s flooring is certified for low VOC emissions.

As previously mentioned, SelecTech’s products can help contribute to LEED points. LEED is a set of guidelines established by the US Green Business Council to encourage greener practices in construction. Organizations can earn LEED “points” by performing various tasks in different areas, including Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, and LEED Innovation. By installing SelecTech flooring, customers will earn points in the Materials & Resources category, with potential for Innovation in the future.

SelecTech also is unique in how much its team cares about its product – and the customers who purchase product – once it leaves the company’s hands. “Once you’re done with it, we will buy it back from you to recycle into new tiles. By forgoing the use of glues and harsh solvents, it’s even easier to give our materials a new life. How many other companies can say that?,” concluded Ricciardelli.
